(African Stand) — Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has tested positive for coronavirus pandemic, the club have confirmed.

The Rojiblancos are currently stepping up their preparations for the new season but will have to do without their leader for the time being as he self-isolates at home.

“On Friday, new PCR tests were carried out on the whole group and the coach’s has come back with a positive result,” Atletico said on their website on Saturday night.

And they added: “He is isolated at home, fulfilling the corresponding quarantine.”

Atletico does not start LaLiga until the third weekend, due to their participation in the quarter-finals of the Champions League last month.

Simeone, who took over as coach at the end of 2011, will hope to be back in time for the game at home to Granada on the weekend of September 26 and 27 – especially after his long-term assistant German ‘Mono’ Burgos left the club earlier this summer.
