Ajax vs Liverpool: Predictions and Betting Tips as Liverpool will be fired up to prove they can cope without Virgil Van Dijk when visiting Ajax in their Champions League Group D opener.

Ajax vs Liverpool Champions League Predictions and Betting Tips
After reaching the semi-finals of this competition a couple of seasons ago, Ajax failed to make it through the group stage last term.

(The African Stand) — Liverpool head to Amsterdam on Wednesday looking to avoid an opening-game slip-up against Ajax in the Champions League.

Both teams would have been disappointed with their exploits in the competition last season, tomorrow’s hosts in particular after failing to advance from their group.

Injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Thiago Alcantara have rocked the six-time winners and Jurgen Klopp will be making sure such concerns are translated onto the pitch.

Date, time, and venue

Ajax vs Liverpool is scheduled for an 8 pm BST kick-off on Wednesday, October 21, 2020.

The match will be played behind closed doors at the Amsterdam Arena with no fans due to being present due to government guidelines regarding coronavirus.

Team news

Liverpool’s defensive options have been stretched further after Joel Matip did not train ahead of their Champions League opener against Ajax and is unlikely to travel.

The Reds are already without senior centre-back Virgil Van Dijk, out for several months with an anterior cruciate ligament injury that requires surgery, and losing Matip – who was spotted coming out of a Liverpool hospital at the weekend – is a further blow.

It means Liverpool are likely to line up with Joe Gomez and midfielder Fabinho in central defence.

Midfielder Thiago Alcantara, who injured a knee in a tackle that saw Everton’s Richarlison sent off in Saturday’s Merseyside derby, also did not train and is unlikely to play.

Head to head (h2h) history and results

Ajax and Liverpool have played each other just twice before, coming in the old European Cup back in 1966. Ajax won 7-3 on aggregate.

Prediction: Ajax 1-2 Liverpool

Liverpool will be without talisman Virgil van Dijk and summer midfield import Thiago, but their firepower upfront will be enough to see off Ajax.

Jurgen Klopp will be aware of his side’s ropey defence of late, giving the hosts a little hope.
