(African Stand) — There was a running battle between Police officers and street vendors in Mzuzu city Malawi following the disagreement on their new places the city council officials allocated to them.

Police have fired teargas to disperse vendors who used to trade at undesignated places that are outside the main market.

The concerned Vendors told our Reporter in Malawi that they will continue to conduct their business outside the main market since the place allocated to them by the city council officials are not good for business.

A woman who used to sell second-hand clothes, outside the Mzuzu market but opted for anonymity complained that the new place allocated to them is awkward and poorly positioned for small businesses.

“I regret voting for President Lazarus Chakwera government, which does not care about me and my children, and only cares about them,” she said.

“Why the government did not want them to listen for our concerns,” she wondered.

The government through Mzuzu city Assembly chased all small business operators from outside Mzuzu main market on Monday, amid teargas and riots, but according to authorities, vendors did not comply with the city’s demand until Thursday this week when police chased them again.

African Stand has learned that many poor households that rely on selling daily foodstuffs and secondhand clothes in Mzuzu have greatly suffered economically after their forceful removal from where the city officials described as undesignated places.
